3 Modalities For Profound Tension Release: the beauty & longevity secrets nobody talks about (part 1).
Master the art of releasing tension.
I want to introduce a practice of mine that has quite literally changed my health and my appearance for the better. It is a foundational aspect to my wellness and beauty pyramid, a modality that will always be a part of my daily routine in one way or another.
This is the art of releasing tension.
Most of us spend excessive amounts of time in a stressed induced state, whether it be from work, school, having 50 mental tabs open at once, juggling deadlines and busy schedules, struggling with finding a balance between perfectionism, pushing our bodies, and simply being human.
The pressure to be exceptional, perfectly polished, and show up in the world with zero flaws has never been more prominent, and with that, most of us are left drained, uninspired, aged, depleted, and TENSE.
If you’re a woman, you can feel the beautiful, playful, whimsical feminine energy being siphoned from your essence.
Aura: grey, flat, blah.
Progesterone / Testosterone: tanked, depleted, suboptimal.
Cortisol: low when it needs to be high, high when it needs to be low.
Breathing mechanics: shallow, accessory muscle dependent, stress induced, reminiscent of a prey animal.
Body: TENSE, holding onto the burdens of what should have been released (physically, mentally, emotionally).
Let me be clear, tension isn’t inherently bad.
Hormetic tension is an acute, mild stressor that triggers adaptation, resilience, and repair. It works in our favor, it’s health promoting.
What we are looking to address is chronic tension. A prolonged, unrelenting stress that exceeds the body's ability to recover, leading to burnout, illness, accelerated aging, and bodily dysfunction.
Fascia acts as a receptacle for chronic tension.
Fascia provides the structural and functional architecture of the body, and is widely considered the most richly innervated sensory organ in the human body. It is estimated that fascia houses 25% more nerve endings than skin and 1,000% more than the collective innervation of muscle.
Any intervention on fascia is an intervention on the nervous system.
Any intervention on the nervous system is an intervention on fascia.
As an organ of stability, protection, and proprioception fascia will adapt itself to the forces it’s repeatedly subjected to whether it’s physically, mentally, or emotionally derived.
Perceived stressors activate various hormones and neurotransmitters, engage the sympathetic nervous system, and eventually stimulate immune cells within the fascia, which directly influences its structure and integrity.
The goal is to foster the release of chronic tension within fascia by bringing a perceived sense of calm and safety back into the body, and effectively engage the parasympathetic so tension can be released.
Magnesium Drenching.
It wasn’t until I started using transdermal (topical) magnesium chloride that I was able to restore chronically depleted levels of magnesium.
Adequate magnesium levels are a pre-requisite for healing from injury, disease, and for maintaining health status.
It is estimated that around 70% of people are magnesium deficient, with factors such as chronic stress, age, disease, and physical activity affecting how quickly we utilize it.
Additionally, modern agriculture has left our food supply lower in magnesium than ever before.
I have found that chronic tension increases magnesium demand, while magnesium depletion increases chronic tension.
It’s a vicious cycle when left unaddressed.
When dissolved in water, magnesium chloride can be utilized topically as a spray, and it absorbs incredibly well. It’s safe, effective, and something I am diligent about incorporating into my daily routine.
There are a handful of brands that sell good topical magnesium options, and I am happy to recommend them if its of interest. I personally make my own, and it’s much more cost effective.
Magnesium Chloride Spray Directions:
Get a glass spray bottle of your choice, and fill it 80% of the way with magnesium chloride flakes or powder (fill it 30% of the way if you have sensitive skin).
Using distilled water, fill the remainder of the spray bottle.
Cover, shake until dissolved, and then it’s ready to apply topically.
DONE. It’s literally that easy.
I like to soak the stomach, lower back, inside the thighs, and massage it in.
In cases of distress or anxiety, soaking the back of the neck can also be helpful to help calm the individual.
By “soaking”, I mean spraying enough of the magnesium solution to where the skin is fully saturated, but not to the point where the solution is dripping onto the floor.
Side notes:
Do not use metal containers or allow metal to touch the solution.
Do not spray on your face, genitals, or hair.
A tingling sensation is normal, allow the solution to fully soak in, and you can wipe the excess crystals off afterwards (this will stop the tingling).
Acupressure & Reflexology.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has emphasized the health / longevity benefits of acupressure and stimulating acupressure points long before any “biohacker” ever existed.
Acupressure is a non-invasive, therapeutic treatment that applies physical pressure to meridian points to balance the body’s flow of energy, also known as Qi. It aims to relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve organ function by removing energy blockages or stagnation.
Regular use of an acupressure mat, specifically a Pranamat, enhanced everything about my tension release approach.
Regular use of an acupressure mat allowed me to effortlessly stimulate various meridians, move lymph, encourage tissue repair, remodel fascia, and improve circulation to every area I work on without having to put any effort into curating a routine. I can turn my brain off, relax, and let the mat do the work.
I’ll even take my mat outside and utilize it while grounding or tanning.
The art of tension release should be enjoyable, fun, and even effortless when needed.
This is one of my effortless approaches.
I’ll do 15-20 minutes on an acupressure mat, while diaphragmatic breathing, simulating the 6 main lymph node clusters, and elevating my legs if I’m feeling it.
I end the session with stretching, and I leave feeling light, refreshed, and clear minded.
Within 3 weeks of regularly using an acupressure mat, I even noticed the skin on my back and my glutes became softer and more even in texture.
An acupressure mat in combination with lymphatic drainage prioritization can work wonders for someone looking to reduce cellulite and even skin texture long term!
(cellulite series coming).
Just standing on my acupressure mat and stimulating reflexology points on my feet as I do computer work helps release so much tension throughout the day.
I’ll link the Pranamat I use here. I did reach out to Pranamat prior to get a discount code for anyone interested. Discount code vitallymelanie works site-wide.
I cannot recommend it enough, it’s not often that I mention products on my socials these days. I love how they emphasize using high quality, non-toxic materials as well. It’s truly one of the best gifts I have ever received.
REM sleep as an unconscious tension detox pathway.
Unresolved emotional conflicts manifest in the body in the form of chronic tension. The negative compounding effects of what I call “stagnant emotional eliminative pathways,” cannot and should not be underestimated.
In humans, sleep is separated into two main types: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.
There is a substantial reduction of noradrenaline levels during REM sleep, the lowest levels of any other period, awake or asleep. This reduction is crucial for emotion processing, and allows us to remove the emotional charge from lived experiences while maintaining memory of the event.
REM sleep is our own built in “therapist”.
REM SLEEP IS OUR OWN BUILT IN THERAPIST!!
It’s a subconscious, emotional processing modality built within all of us.
Better sleep quality = enhanced stress and emotional processing capabilities = enhanced tension reduction.
There is less tension to release when the stressors of our lives are properly processed.
There is less tension to release when we are more resilient to daily stressors.
REM sleep optimization tackles both.
The best part is that acupressure and magnesium drenching will help promote incredible sleep quality.
To tie everything together, we must prioritize the importance of circadian health. The best sleep is built by consistently exposing ourselves to natural light first thing in the morning, mid-day, and in the evening, with an emphasis on mitigating artificial light at night.
Pair all of this with a tart cherry mocktail with L-theanine, insolitol, and 1/8 tsp of baking soda, and I promise you will sleep incredibly well.
Warm goat milk with L-theanine, inositol, and 1/8 tsp of baking soda would also work incredibly well. Throw in some cinnamon and a dash of maple syrup for a sweet treat :)
If you want to keep it really simple, 1/8 tsp of baking soda dissolved in water is worth trying.
